Much has been written in the press recently regarding the bingo industry struggling because of the anti cigarette law in England. Conditions have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for big aid to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. However can the online version of this quintessential game present a lifeline, or might it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar peer?
Bingo is an ancient game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game of late had seen a recent return in appeal with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo parlors instead of the discos on a Friday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the introduction of the anti cigarette law around UK.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 all public places will not be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favorite places where many people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Obviously they have not forgotten this age old game?
The answer is on the net. Gamblers realize that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and smoke and still have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened almost perfectly with the anti smoking law.
Of course gambling on on the net could never replace the communal portion of going over to the bingo hall, but for a group of people the rules have left a number of bingo players with no alternative.
