A lot has been talked in the papers just a while ago regarding the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the smoking ban in England. Things have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge tax cuts to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However does the net version of this classic game present a reprieve, or will it not compare to its real life equivalent?
Bingo is an ancient game normally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. Although the game of late had seen a recent return in popularity with younger men and women deciding to hit the bingo halls in place of the discos on a weekend. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the enacting of the anti smoking law throughout United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be able to puff on cigarettes while marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 every public location will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most common locations where players like to smoke.
The results of the smoking ban can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo halls. Numbers have plunged and the business is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where have the players gone? Certainly they haven’t deserted this enduring game?
The answer is on the internet. People realise that they can enjoy bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a drink and cigarette and still have a chance at big jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on on the internet is unlikely to replace the social part of heading down to the bingo parlor, but for a group of players the rules have left a good many bingo enthusiasts with no choice.
