An abundance has been reported in the press not long ago about the bingo industry being hit as a result of the anti smoking law in the UK. Conditions have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive aid to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. However will the internet version of this quintessential game offer a lifeline, or will it in no way compare to its real life relative?
Bingo is an familiar game usually played by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game of late had experienced a recent increase in popularity with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo parlours in place of the clubs on a Friday night. All this is about to be reversed with the enforcement of the anti cigarette law all over England and Wales.
No more will gamblers be permitted to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 all public locations will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most common areas where many people like to smoke.
The results of the cigarette ban can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already not allowed in the bingo parlours. Players have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Surely they have not abandoned this ancient game?
The answer is on the web. Gamblers know that they can bet on bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and cig and still enjoy massive prizes. This is a recent development and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course wagering on on the web could never replace the communal portion of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of men and women the rules have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with no option.
