Will the Anti Smoking Law in the United Kingdom Force Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Web?
Apr 182026

Much has been talked in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt because of the anti smoking law in Britain. Conditions have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for huge aid to assist in keeping the industry alive. However will the internet variation of this quintessential game present a lifeline, or might it in no way compare to its real life peer?

Bingo has been an enduring game normally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had undergone a recent comeback in appeal with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo halls rather than the discos on a weekend. All this is about to be reversed with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over Britain.

Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public area will not be permitted to allow smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favored locations where many people like to smoke.

The results of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already forbidden in the bingo halls. Numbers have dropped and the industry is literally fighting for its life. But where did all the players go? Surely they haven’t forgotten this established game?

The answer is on the internet. Players are now realizing that they can gamble on bingo using their computer while enjoying a beverage and fag and in the end, have a chance at massive cash rewards. This is a recent anomaly and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.

Of course wagering on online is unlikely to replace the communal part of going down to the bingo hall, but for a group of men and women the governing edicts have left many bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
